Sisi-appointed parliament seat vacant after Siam resignation

Egypt’s People’s Assembly accepted the resignation of outgoing Member of Parliament Serry Siam Sunday, and notified President Abdel Fatah al-Sisi of the vacancy among the 596 seats, Youm7 reported.

Siam was one of the 28 parliamentarians appointed by the president, and had previously served as the head of Egypt’s Court of Cassation and the Supreme Judicial Council.

A total of 301 members of parliament voted to approve the resignation, 88 rejected it, and 13 abstained.

Although he did not announce the reason for terminating his short-lived membership, as the parliament only convened for the first time last month, Siam verbally clashed with parliament speaker Ali Abdel Aal in the early sessions over the way members of parliament should be nominated for the deputy speaker post.

Meanwhile, the parliament is scheduled to discuss its draft internal statute over a number of sessions this week.
