Dozens of Cairo taxi drivers have cut off the road outside the State Council Saturday in protest against what they called “unfair competition” with the application-based taxi service operators Uber and Careem, Youm7 reported.
Amid heavy presence of security forces outside Egypt’s vital building, the angry drivers raised banners reading “We will not remain silent and watch our rights violated,” according to Youm7.
They sought help of President Abdel Fatah al Sisi and called on him and Prime Minister Sherif Ismail to interfere and shut down the said car service companies.
The protest is the not the first since Uber and Careem started operation in Egypt two year ago. On Feb. 05, dozens of white taxi drivers in Cairo gathered outside the Mostafa Mahmoud Mosque in Cairo’s district of Mohandesen to protest against what they called “illegal employment practices” by the two companies, according to Al Ahram.
