The Egyptian Ministry of Defence said in a statement on Monday that it discovered and destroyed 12 tunnels on the border with the Gaza Strip in February.
The Egyptian authorities have tightened security measures at its land and sea borders with Gaza following the overthrow of President Mohamed Morsi.

The Egyptian army began in September last year pumping large quantities of seawater along the border between Egypt and the Gaza Strip to destroy the tunnels.
Residents of Gaza rely on the tunnels to alleviate the difficulties of living under the blockade, using them to smuggle in food, supplies and fuel.
