German delegation to check security measures at Hurghada airport

Germany's Transport Ministry is to send a transport security delegation to Hurghada International Airport this month to inspect measures taken to protect German tourists and aircraft bound for Germany, according to Red Sea security sources.

The delegation, which will visit on March 11-12, will also assess the response of the Egyptian Civil Aviation Ministry and security services to their various security-related requests.

The delegation will assess whether the measures taken are sufficient to allow Germany to continue flights to Egypt, security sources told Al-Masry Al-Youm.

Civil Aviation Minister Hossam Kamal will meet on Sunday with officials from the ministry, the Egyptian Airports Company and Hurghada Airport to tackle arrangements for the visit.

In related news, British firm Control Risks has finished its reports on the state of security measures at several Egyptian airports, including Cairo, Marsa Alam and Sharm al-Sheikh. The final report will be made available to the Civil Aviation Minister soon.

The British delegation was tasked with assessing the procedures followed to secure travellers in the arrivals and departures halls, as well as in the luggage-loading area.

The Civil Aviation Ministry and Control Risks Middle East signed the deal last month in the presence of Prime Minister Sherif Ismail.

According to Kamal, the six-month agreement will be enforced in two stages, the first lasting for six months maximum, at a cost of less than US$700,000, covering the airports of Cairo, Sharm el-Sheikh and Marsa Alam.
