Egypt imposed Monday evening a media gag on investigations into a case of illegal NGO foreign funding, in which a number of human right activists are accused, according to a statement issued by Egypt’s Judicial Investigation Authority.
The ban imposed on all audio and visual media outlets, newspapers, magazines, and online news sites, the statement added. The ban does not include press releases that could be issued from the prosecution committee that probe into the case.
The imposed will be lifted after the end of the investigations, according to the statement.
Last week, the Cairo Prosecution issued a decision that freezes the assets of political activist and journalist Hossam Baghat, founder of the Arab Network for Human Rights Information Gamal Eid, two other two activists, and their relatives.
The case dates back to 2011, since then no investigative session has been held, the defendents’ lawyer Taher Abu al-Nasr told Youm7 Saturday.
