We had fair parliamentary elections guaranteed by the government. Those who won the elections according to the American democracy. I say that there are both advantages and disadvantages of current Egyptian parliament that came to complete the road map of the Egyptian state.
The disadvantage starts by the huge number of members that approaches 600 MPs. This number hinders good performance of the parliament indeed. If each member took only five minutes to discuss certain issue, it will take more than 24 hours to discuss one matter, which is impossible. The other disadvantage of the parliament is the representatives. This came after a military coup occurred in 1952 and the successive governments continued to destroy every aspect of Egyptian civilization. Consequently, political parties were destroyed and returned by a single one that continued the destruction, which is the National Democratic Party.
After the setback of January 25, the National Democratic Party was replaced by the Freedom and Justice Party, the political arm of the Muslim Brotherhood. However, after the revolution of June 30, more than 90 new parties were formed, most of which is very weak.
This resulted in a parliament that proves that no democracy can be achieved with illiteracy. This can be described as illiterate voter elects illiterate representative. There were good candidates as well. This situation was a must giving all circumstances.
I suggest that only those who register themselves should participate in the voting process and not all those who reached 18 years old. Moreover, they should be at least 21 years old and should be educated at least to the primary school. Candidates should be at least 35 years old and should have spent two years in political work. This is the way to have a decent parliament.
