CAIRO - The ruling National Democratic Party (NDP) rejects any kind of foreign intervention in Egypt's internal affairs whatever its source or content, according to a senior NDP official.
The comment was in response was to remarks by a US official who urged Egyptian authorities to allow foreign groups to monitor next month’s parliamentary elections.
"The political work in Egypt is a national activity, which cannot be directed from outside," Secretary General of the NDP Safwat el-Sherif added.
He said that the party was looking forward to competing with other political parties in Egypt in “fair and free elections” monitored by the Higher Commission for Elections (HCE) and the civil society groups.
"The party rejects the exploitation of the recent atmosphere of freedom in inciting problems regarding the elections," el-Sherif told reporters Tuesday.
El-Sherif's comments came in prevatent to calls by US Assistant Secretary of State for Democracy, Human Rights and Labour Michael Posner, who said last week that that the US administration had urged the Egyptian Government to have the elections supervised by domestic and international monitors.
Egypt’s State-run human rights watchdog and the HCE are also opposed to foreign monitoring, saying that such monitoring would harm Egypt’s sovereignty.
