Arrested students in Sudan to be released next week: Makram

Minister of Immigration Nabila Makram said on Thursday that the Egyptian students arrested in Sudan for leaking exams will be released next week.

A group of 26 Egyptian high school students were arrested in Sudan on Monday along with students from other nationalities on charges of mass cheating and leaking school exams.

Makram left the Sudanese capital Khartoum on Thursday after a three-day visit where she met with the parents of the arrested students and officials in the Sudanese foreign ministry and Egyptian embassy.

According to Makram, the case is considered a national security issue for Sudan. However, the high-level conversations and meetings between both countries were fruitful enough and resulted in a pledge from Sudan to release the Egyptian students next week.

She also declined purported claims that the students are being abused in the detention facilities and said she will go back to Khartoum to follow up on their release.

Meanwhile, a Sudanese judicial committee will visit Egypt soon to present needed documents and clues related to the Egyptian students’ involvement in the trial.
