Cairo coordinates with Amman to halt detentions of Egyptians

Egypt is coordinating with Jordan to stop random inspections of Egyptian workers in the streets in Amman in the wake of the assault and detention of an Egyptian laborer by Jordanian police; Youm7 reported the Egyptian embassy in Jordan Monday.

A video of an Egyptian being beaten by Jordanian police surfaced on social media earlier this month; Egyptian Immigration Minister Nabila Makram later announced reconciliation had been reached reached.

The expatriate police of Jordan arrested Hassan Abdel Maguid, originally from Egypt’s Mansoura, for violating the labor law in al-Rasifa, Jordan.

Abdel Maguid was to be deported after being referred to trial over violating the labor law and resisting the authorities, but he was released for two weeks with the help of the labor delegate of the Egyptian embassy in Amman, Makram said.

The two week notice period is close to an end, and Abdel Maguid is expected have a new work permit issued.

The Egyptian Ministry of Manpower has received several complaints regarding inspections to Egyptian laborers in the streets while doing their daily activities, prompting the labor delegate of the Egyptian embassy in Amman to request the Jordanian Ministry of Labor address the matter.

Jordanian ambassador to Egypt Beshr al-Khasawna told Ammon news in July that the number of the Egyptian expatriates in Jordan reached 400,000 persons.
