A total of 16 defendants received sentences ranging between 10 to 15 years jail over charges of inciting violence in al-Shohadaa square in Helwan July 26, 2013, southern Cairo, Youm7 reported.
The South Cairo Criminal Court sentenced seven to 10 years in jail, while nine tried in absentia were sentenced to 15 years in prison.
The defendants include two former parliamentarians, Ramadan Omar and Mohamdi Abdel-Maqsoud; the prosecution accused the convicts of inciting violence, possessing unlicensed weapons, disturbing public order, and belonging to outlawed group.
A total of 45 alleged members of the Muslim Brotherhood were sentenced in March to two years in prison over “showing force,” while 22 were acquitted in Sharqia, the Delta, Youm7 reported. In the same month, the Damanhur Criminal Court acquitted 49 alleged Muslim Brotherhood supporters on charges of destruction of public property and inciting violence.
