Solidarity minister compensates shopkeepers affected by Cairo fires

The Minister of Social Solidarity Ghada Wali on Thursday met with residents and shop owners affected by the fires that broke out in Cairo earlier this month, Youm7 reported.

The meeting, which took place at the National Foundation for Family and Community Development, was to pay financial aid to three victims and 99 shop owners whose shops were damaged in the Attaba and Ghouria fires.

“The ministry has calculated all losses incurred during the two fires in order to determine appropriate compensation for each shop keeper and resident in both districts,” Youm7 quoted Wali as saying during the meeting. The compensation value amounted to 2.3 million EGP (about $255,555).

Over the past two weeks a series of fires struck Cairo and other Egyptian cities.

Three people were killed and 91 injured in the May 10 fire in El-Rewaiei market near Cairo’s Attaba Square. At least six buildings were destroyed as well as dozens of street vendor stalls, according to the Cairo Ambulance Authority.

On May 11, another fire erupted in Cairo’s district of Ghouria causing damages to shops and stalls in the area. The causes of the two fires have not been officially determined.
