Abba Makarios, General Bishop of Minya, issued a statement to denounce the assault against a Coptic old woman was stripped off by mobs after rumors about a romantic relationship between her son and a Muslim girl.
He explained that the Coptic man Ashraf Abdu had to leave the village after he was threatened for rumors about such relationship with a Muslim woman.
His parents reported the police against such threats but they were just ignored and mistreated by police officer. On the second day, the mobs attacked several Coptic houses, robbed and set them on fire. This caused losses estimated at 350.000 LE.
Then, the angry mobs attacked the old woman and stripped her off and humiliated her.
Statement called authorities to arrest all those involved in the attack and hold them accountable.
