The Coptic Orthodox church celebrates the entry of the Holy Family to the land of Egypt on June first. In the past, the celebration was held in Egypt in Nile Cruises accompanied by hymns and praises and Coptic melodies.
Therefore, the Coptic Church in Germany headed by Abba Demian decided to hold similar celebration on Weser river because the Coptic monastery in the city of Höxter is located on the river.
Abba Damian has started this tradition since 2009 by organizing a river cruise in conjunction with the various Christian denominations on the first Sunday of June to celebrate the entry of the Holy Family to the land of Egypt.
Around 100 persons of various ages participated in the celebration this year. The celebration includes several Egyptian songs and prayers to bless the river.
Abba Deman said that such celebration aims to please the participations in such holy occasion, especially those suffering people including an Eritrean refugee that lost her mother and sister in their journey to Germany. The celebration was also attended by Abba Tawadros Muharraqi , priest of Höxter.
