Ain Sokhna Port investigation police and customs authorities thwarted an attempt on Monday to smuggle a large shipment of the banned painkiller, tramadol into Egypt from India for the second time in just over a week.
The interior minister gave instructions to tighten inspection measures for containers at seaports to prevent the smuggling of banned and illegal substances.
The police received information that an import and export company planned to receive a large shipment of tramadol at the Red Sea port.
Tight inspections were imposed on imported containers arriving into Ain Sokhna, resulting in the discovery and seizure of the illegal cargo.
The painkillers were found inside a 40 foot container, supposedly full of women's bags.
The owner of the import and export company was summoned for interrogation, in the frame of wider investigations into the incident.
