Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) rate among girls who fall in the age group of 15 to 17 years old has reached 61 percent; Youm7 quoted Mona Amin, the executive director of the National Program for eliminating FGM.
Amin said that the new FGM draft law protects Egyptian women against one of the worst practices violating their rights in human dignity, aiming to toughen punishment of circumcision to be considered as a felony instead of a misdemeanor, saying that the “current penalty is not deterrent.”
