Egypt's former leading Muslim cleric, Ali Gomaa, has escaped unharmed from an apparent assassination attempt in Cairo, state television reported on Friday morning.
Gomaa served as the country's grand mufti, the authority responsible for giving Islamic edicts, until 2013.
He was shot at near a mosque in 6 October city, a satellite development on the outskirts of Cairo, where he was planning to lead Friday prayers.
"Ali Gomaa survived an attempted gunshot while he was present for Friday prayer in 6 October," it was announced on state television.
His personal bodyguard was slightly injured in the foot, it added.
