Egypt joins Euro-Med Union’s regional panel

CAIRO-  The Euro-Mediterranean Union’s Regional Committee members have unanimously approved an Egyptian proposal calling for setting up a regional panel for water management and rationalising water usage in sustainable development purposes in each member state.

The members, representing 25 Euro-Med countries, agreed on the Egyptian proposal that was submitted by Qalubia Governor Adli Hussein during their meeting in the French harbour city of Marseille earlier in the week.

The panel, according to its terms of reference, would be responsible for strengthening co-operation among member states in water management and usage at the regional level, Adli said after the meeting,

which was attended by representatives from 27 European Union member states, and 16 Mediterranean partner countries.

The participants have also approved a project for upgrading the Water Research Centre, which is located in the Qalubia subrub of el-Qanater el- Khairiya, Adli Hussein said.

He added that Egypt was selected as a representative of the 16 Mediterranean partner countries at the regional panel.
