Wafd Party submitted a proposal to build churches and monasteries, MP
Egypt’s liberal Wafd Party was the first to submit a draft law to regulate the building and renovation of churches in the country, said MP Mohamed Fouad on Thursday.

The Egyptian parliamentarian stressed the importance of issuing such a law, saying that Wafd’s proposal included the conditions to issue the necessary licenses to build the churches and monasteries.

According to the proposal, any request to build a church or a monastery should be attached with a written approval from the head of religious sect, said Fouad, clarifying, “The request would be accepted in case of the absence of the governor’s response within 60 days of its submission.”

He added, “Wafd’s draft law prevents changing the building activities even if the religious rituals have been suspended. It also prevents the closure of any legal churches without final judicial veredict.”
