Navy confiscates three tons of marijuana in Red Sea

The Egyptian navy has seized a large haul of marijuana on the coast of the Red Sea governorate, according to the Military Spokesperson Mohamed Samir’s Facebook page.

The haul was identified in the sea off the coastal village of Abu Thoma, just north of the town of Safa.

Security forces noticed several sacks floating on the surface of water. On retrieving the 20 sacks, naval personnel found three tons of marijuana, according to Samir on Wednesday.

“The troops are still carrying out their duties to secure the coasts against smuggling and illegal immigration,” he added.

Naval and security forces periodically discover hauls of marijuana being smuggled within and across Egypt's borders.

In September, the navy interrupted an attempt to smuggle five tons of the drug, which was found in 95 sacks on a boat near Hurghada.
