Cairo and London exchange artists in joint festival Masafat

 Masafat (Distances) is a two-part international festival held in London and Cairo and organized by London’s Thirty Three Thirty Three in partnership with the ICA and Cairo’s VENT.

 
In September, both cities will see four days of music, film, talks and events showcasing “the best in forward-thinking underground culture, promoting cultural and artistic exchange between the two regions,” according to the event description.
 
The first part of Masafat will take place in London starting 1 September, while the second half will be on 20 September in Cairo.
 
Egyptians participating in Masafat and in the London line-up are singer and musician Nadah El-Shazly, musician Sam Shalaby, musician and chanter Abdallah Miniawy and musician Herein Lies. The lineup also includes musicians from the UK and other countries including Tunisia, Turkey, Canada and the USA.
 
London will also screen the documentary film Out on the Street, and will host three workshops titled Friday Salon: Hip Hop & the Arab World, Re-Imagining the Urban in Arabic Film, and Alternative Infrastructures: Music and Arts in Cairo.
 
In Cairo, the Egyptians performing are Ismael, Ola Saad, Dawsha and Abanob, Nur and C31S39.
 
Visiting bands and musicians include Rezzett, Myslma, Abyusif, Gaika, Sami Baha, Amnesia Scanner, Lafawndah & Beatrice Dillon, Bradley Zero, Boiler Room DJ's and Masafat Crew.
 
Performances in Cairo will be hosted by Darb 1718, Sherazade club and Ismailia Garage.
