Marking the tenth anniversary of the death of Egypt’s most famous novelist, Naguib Mahfouz, an exhibition titled "Panorama Mahfouz" opened at the creativity centre of Cairo’s Beit El-Seheimy cultural venue on Saturday and will run until 8 September.
The opening ceremony also featured a music concert by Belal El-Sheikh and the Sehr El-Sharq Ensemble. The concert comprised soundtracks from films adapted from Mahfouz’s literary works.
The exhibition includes paintings by young artists, in addition to a collection of photos and snapshots from the films of the author's work which were contributed to the exhibition by poet Mohamed Boghdady.
Mahfouz passed away on 30 August 2006 at the age of 94, leaving behind a rich literary legacy.
“Young writers idolise him or hold him up as an authority figure to rebel against, [and] his novels remain on the bestseller lists, or are turned into successful television series,” writes Ahram Online’s Mohamed Saad in an article commemorating the late novelist and tracing his impact on a new generation of young Egyptian writers.
Mahfouz won the Nobel prize for literature in 1988, the only Arab writer to have yet done so.
