Egypt to start construction of Zamalek underground metro station in 2 weeks: Minister
Egypt's Transportation Minister Galal Said announced that the construction of the underground metro station in Zamalek neighborhood, which is part of Cairo's third metro line, will begin in two weeks time, Al Ahram Arabic website reported.
The construction of this line, which passes through from Ataba district near downtown to the densely populated district of Imbaba, will cost EGP 20 million, the minister said on Thursday.

Said added that around 3.5 million citizens use the metro on a daily basis in Cairo with 22 million trips per day.

In August, Egypt's President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi said that the new metro lines would be completed by 2018.

The metro, which operates throughout the capital city and surrounding areas and runs at a speed of 80 kilometres an hour, is constructed both under and above ground, and is one of the fastest and cheapest means of transportation in Cairo. A ticket costs EGP 1 ($ 0.12).

The government has repeatedly said it would raise the price of metro tickets to offset annual losses, but has not yet followed through.
