CAIRO - Egypt is closely monitoring the recent accord signed between Israel and Cyprus demarcating their maritime borders, Egyptian newspaper Al-Masry Al-Youm quoted a senior official at the Foreign Ministry as saying.
"We are monitoring the accord n order to ensure that the accord does not affect Egypt's economic zone in the Mediterranean," said Hossam Zaki, the spokesman for the Egyptian Foreign Ministry.
The agreement, signed two weeks ago, aims to facilitate a search for mineral deposits in the east Mediterranean. Huge natural gas reserves have been discovered in the area.
Zaki said the Egyptian Foreign Ministry is conducting technical and legal research to ensure that the borders specified under the accord do not infringe on Egyptian maritime territory.
