Saudi ambassador to Egypt leaves to Riyadh on 3-day trip

Saudi Arabia's ambassador to Egypt Ahmed Kattan left Cairo on a three-day trip to the Kingdom on Wednesday, Ahram Arabic website reported.

The ambassador's departure comes amid signs of tension between Egypt and Saudi Arabia over Cairo's votes on two rival UN Security Council resolutions on Syria earlier this week.

Prior to Kattan's departure on Wednesday, local authorities removed the concrete security blocks surrounding the Saudi embassy in Giza.

Giza governorate announced that there was no political reason behind the decision and that the move was coordinated with the embassy and the Egyptian ministry of foreign affairs.

The decision to remove the barriers and the Saudi ambassador's unscheduled trip to Riyadh prompted speculation about a possible crisis between Egypt and Saudi over UN security council resolutions on Syria earlier this week.

On Saturday Egypt's UN Ambassador Amr Aboulatta voted for a French-drafted Saudi-backed resolution on Syria and also for a rival Russian proposal.

The French proposal called for an end to all fighting in Aleppo, while the Russian proposal called for a cease-fire.

Both proposals failed to pass in the Security Council.

Saudi officials in the UN have openly expressed dismay that Egypt voted for the Russian proposal, which was strongly opposed by Riyadh.

Since then, a war of words has broken out between Saudi and Egyptian writers and media figures on TV and in the press.
