Top prison officials detained over Ismailiya jail break

Ismailiya prosecution ordered on Monday the detention of El-Mostakbal Prison's warden and chief inspector for four days pending investigations into the escape of inmates from the prison last week, Ahram Arabic website reported.

The prosecution is accusing the two officers of "extreme negligence" and being directly responsible for the escape of six inmates from El-Mostakbal Prison, which serves as a temporary detention centre for prisoners who are being tried in nearby courts.

On Sunday, three other officers and 11 lower ranking policemen were ordered detained for four days pending investigations and also face charges of "extreme negligence."

The interior ministry announced on Monday the appointing of a new security director for the Suez Canal city of Ismailiya.

Last Thursday, six inmates escaped from the prison after taking possession of a guard's weapon.

An exchange of fire ensued inside the prison between security forces and the armed inmates, who received help from outside.

A local resident was killed and five policemen were injured in the gun battle, including a police major who was shot in the head and died Saturday from his injuries.

One of the six escaped inmates was apprehended on Friday and another was shot dead by police in Ismailiya.
