Al-Sisi carries out radical changes among army’s main leadership

President Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi issued on Saturday a number of decrees through which he made several changes in the high-ranking leadership of the Egyptian army, according to an official statement by the army spokesperson.

Through these decrees, Al-Sisi appointed new commanders for the air force and navy, in addition to replacing the commander of the air defence force, Lieutenant General Abdel-Moneim Ibrahim Bayoumy Altras, after he was appointed as a presidential advisor.

The new commander of the air defence force is General Ali Mohamed Fahmy, 56, who was acting as the air defense forces chief-of-staff.

General Ahmed Khaled Hassan, 57, who was chief-of-staff for the navy, was promoted to commander, replacing Lieutenant General Osama Mounir Mohamed Rabie.

Rabie was appointed as deputy head of the Suez Canal Authority, which operates the Egyptian strategic shipping route between Europe and Asia.

Rabie assumed his new role on Sunday, according to the army spokesperson’s statement.
