I have recently watched an interview of Dr. Abd El-Moneem Saeed on CBC Tv. He was trying to analyst Egyptian diplomacy, especially since after Egypt voted for the Russian and French resolution at the UN at the same time. Saeed tried to understand and interpret the confusion of Egyptian diplomacy by claiming that Egypt is lacking a strategy to deal with international issues.
With my respect to Dr. Saeed, I completely differ with what he was trying to say, as I don’t think that the confusion in Egyptian diplomacy is because of a lacking strategy. I totally believe that you can’t have an independent diplomacy without being independent in your decisions.
Unfortunately, Egypt is not independent and will not be anytime soon, unless it can achieve huge leaps in progress within its economy. The first step to becoming independent is to be able to have self-sufficiency. Until Egypt can achieve this independence it will suffer from this confusing diplomacy.
Having said that, Politicians and Diplomats should not take any steps that may hurt Egypt’s pride. I believe that a big part of Egypt’s problem right now is their Diplomats as they don’t estimate the current situation and they can’t recognize that Egypt is not the same as before in this current moment.
In conclusion, I want to emphasize that Egypt has a long way to go before international powers can consider it as a main power in the region again. To achieve this, we need a lot of work in all fields.
