Sheikh Ahmed al-Tayeb, Sheikh of Al-Azhar, said that people don’t like Dhimmi term, though it was very popular in the beginning of Islam as it was the first time that non-Muslims had rights under an Islamic state.
He added that Islamic civilization has always been proud of that term since it reflects the protection provided for non-Muslims under the Islamic rule.
