Egypt FM Shoukry to head to Russia next week

Egypt’s Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry is set to head next week on a European tour that includes Russia and Estonia to discuss bilateral ties, a statement by the foreign ministry read.

Foreign Ministry Spokesman Ahmed Abu Zeid said Shoukry will deliver a letter from Egypt’s President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi to Russian President Vladimir Putin that would underline Egypt’s interest in bolstering ties with Russia.

It is unclear if the discussions would touch on the resumption of Russian flights to Egypt, which have been suspended for more than a year over a deadly passenger flight crash.

Shoukry will also meet his Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov to coordinate on several regional and international issues, including combating terrorism.

Discussions over Russian investment in Egyptian sectors, as well as a Russian industrial zone set to be established in the Suez Canal Development Zone, will be on the table with Russian trade and industry minister.

Shoukry is then set to head to Estonia 22 August, where he will hold meetings with top Estonian officials.
