CAIRO: The Tenth of Ramadan Military Court adjourned the trial of blogger Maikel Nabil to Monday in order to review his blog.
“We expect Nabil to be sentenced to a period of one to three years,” John Milad, movie director and human rights activist, who is also Nabil’s friend, told Daily News Egypt.
A protest took place on Sunday in front of the Ministry of Defense condemning military trials of civilians. “We are organizing another protest [on Monday] in front of the Tenth of Ramadan Military Court,” Milad said.
Nabil’s case was previously adjourned last Thursday to give lawyers enough time to examine the case documents.
Nabil was arrested by military police last week from his home in Ain Shams, and detained for 15 days pending investigation. He appeared before a military court on Thursday.
“We were surprised to find out that Nabil signed a document accepting his early trial,” Milad said.
Known for his controversial views regarding the state of Israel and other issues, Nabil cited on his blog what he calls the army’s conspiracy against the revolution, recounting torture allegations against the army in a post titled “The army and the people are not one hand.”
He wrote his blog post one day before he was arrested, which is said to be a possible reason for his detention.
