Egypts FM discusses Gaza developments with Jordanian counterpart

Egypt s Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry met on Sunday with his Jordanian counterpart Ayman El-Safadi for discussions on the escalation of tensions along the Israel-Gaza border that saw the Israeli military kill 16 Palestinian protesters at the weekend.

On Friday, Israeli military snipers opened fire on Palestinians protesting along the border as part of the annual "Land Day" demonstrations against Israeli settlements.

In a press conference in Cairo after their meeting, Shoukry said that he and El-Safadi were working on a solution for the Palestinians while seeking to protect their human rights.

He also demanded that the international community take responsibility for improving the Palestinians  situation.

El-Safadi said that Jordan rejects the Israeli escalation in Gaza, adding that there are no signs of a just peace settlement being near at hand.

However, he said that coordination on the part of Arab nations continued to help the Palestinians in demanding their rights.

Shoukry said that he and El-Safadi had also discussed the issue of Egyptian workers in Jordan, as well as other challenges in the region. Preparations for the upcoming Arab summit in Riyadh were also discussed, with the war on terrorism high on the agenda.

The Jordanian FM said that the he had discussed the situation in Syria with Shoukry, expressing his hopes for a political solution and his sorrow for the inhumane situation in Ghouta.
