A poem called When do they announce the death of Arabs was written by the famous Lebanese poet Nizar Qabbani, in which he honestly expresses the miserable situation reached by the Arabs at that time. The poet was very honest and his words were quoted by many people who believed in him.
Nizar Qabbani attacked the June setback and President Gamal Abdel Nasser, and therefore, the Egyptian government prevented his songs from circulating on radio and television, though the great Egyptian singers used to sing for him, including Umm Kulthum, Abdel Wahab, Abdel Halim and others. But the decision was canceled later.
When Gamal Abdel Nasser died in 1970, Nizar wrote his famous poem, Lament to Abdel Nasser, We killed you, O last of the prophets. The irony here is that poets and writers usually praise the ruler in his life and describe him with the most beautiful qualities and turn against them with curses when they die. Howver, Nizar Qabbani did the opposite and attacked Gamal Abdel Nasser in his life and praised him after his death, and so did the Egyptian poet Ahmed Fouad Negm. Indeed, they are great artists who really express our feelings and situations, and refrain from personal benefits expected from the rulers
