The Salafi Nour Party called on its members to take part in a massive protest planned for Friday to denounce the supplementary Constitutional Declaration issued by the ruling military council last Sunday. The protest is also against the Supreme Constitutional Court’s recent ruling that dissolved Parliament.
The Nour Party said Thursday on its Facebook page that, "The party confirms its absolute rejection of any form of constitutional coup against the democratic path that the Egyptian people have chosen."
Last week the SCAF issued a supplement to the Constitutional Declaration that had been voted in by popular referendum in March 2011. The SCAF’s move came following a court verdict that dissolved the Islamist-led People's Assembly last week.
The articles of the amendment grant the SCAF legislative and financial powers and determine the responsibilities of the next president, who is anticipated to be officially announced on Sunday. The supplement also sets rules for electing the Constituent Assembly that would draft the country's new constitution, an assembly that had already been dissolved once before by court order. The fate of the current Constituent Assembly recently formed by Parliament is still uncertain.
"We assert our total rejection of the illegitimate supplementary Constitutional Declaration issued by the military council. We also reject the methodical annihilation of the gains of the revolution, including disbanding Parliament and threatening to disassemble the Constituent Assembly, while constitutional experts confirmed that the government has no right to take either action."
The party also denounced the lateness in announcing the results of the runoff election after both Mohamed Morsy and Ahmed Shafiq filed appeals against the electoral process, stating that this delay creates more room for distrust.
The party confirmed the peacefulness of Friday's demonstration and urged participants not to commit any acts of violence.
Scores of protesters marched on Tahrir Square Thursday chanting slogans against the military council and demanding that it leave power, while others set up makeshift tents in preparation for Friday's protest calling for the handover of power.
