Brotherhood Guidance Bureau proposes new governors

The Muslim Brotherhood's Guidance Bureau has proposed a list of 50 new governors to President Mohamed Morsy, a source within the group told Al-Masry Al-Youm on condition of anonymity Tuesday.

Different sources close to the president told Al-Masry Al-Youm that Morsy would appoint eight new governors from the Freedom and Justice Party and five from the Salafi Nour Party.

Nour Party spokesperson Yousry Hammad warned of a single party dominating the governorates.

“We want governors from all political forces,“ he said in a statement.

Prime Minister Hesham Qandil said, during his visit Qalubiya Governorate Tuesday, that the government is considering giving more autonomy and wider powers to governors under a new law.

Liberal and secular powers have expressed fears that Morsy may spread the Muslim Brotherhood domination over the country’s institutions to replace the grip of the former ruling National Democratic Party, which is now dissolved.

Former presidential candidate Hamdeen Sabbahi asked Morsy last week to combat “Brotherhood domination” the same way he took out the “domination of the military.”

The Muslim Brotherhood was a partner in the national struggle before and during the revolution, but when it rose to power following President Hosni Mubarak’s ouster, the group wanted to take over all authorities from the Parliament to the presidency, Sabbahi said during a conference organized by the Nasserist Karama Party, which he heads.

Morsy will lose popular support if he follows the path of domination, Sabbahi added.
