The dissolved People’s Assembly may not reconvene after a ruling by the Supreme Constitutional Court in June said its election law was unconstitutional, according to a memo by the Muslim Brotherhood’s legal committee.
A court currently considering appeals challenging the Supreme Constitutional Court’s verdict might deem the assembly unconstitutional, said the memo submitted to the Guidance Bureau, the group’s leading board, calling upon the group to get ready for the next parliamentary elections.
In June, the Supreme Constitutional Court ordered the dissolution of the assembly over the unconstitutionality of its electoral law that allowed partisan runners to compete for seats reserved for independents.
Faisal al-Sayyed, a member of the legal committee at the Brotherhood’s Freedom and Justice Party, said a petition had been prepared to present to the court to refute legal arguments the SCC relied upon in the dissolution verdict.
But Amr Derag, secretary for the FJP’s office in Giza, predicted that the court would only rule that elections for independents seats are unconstitutional, saying that the case is not a big concern for the party which, he said, is well-prepared for that possibility
