Egypt's opposition to mark Mohamed Mahmoud clashes

Egyptian non-Islamist groups are calling protests beginning 19 November to mark the one-year anniversary of fatal clashes on Cairo's Mohamed Mahmoud Street.

Prolonged street battles erupted between protesters in November 2011 after security forces tried to violently disperse a sit-in on Tahrir Square.

Five days of clashes, mostly in downtown's Mohamed Mahmoud Street, left 47 dead and thousands injured.

Political groups are calling for five days of commemorations -- dubbed 'Days of Freedom' -- to coincide with the clashes.

Mohamed Mahmoud street will be temporarily renamed the 'Street of Freedom' and adorned with flowers and posters of those killed last year.

Among the groups calling for protest are the April 6 Youth Movement (Democratic Front), the National Association for Change and the Egypt Freedom Party.
