Judges Club head to meet with Supreme Judicial Council

Ahmed al-Zend, head of Judges Club, said he will meet with the Supreme Judicial Council on Monday.

Several members of the club board as well as a delegation from the club branches in the governorate will attend to discuss the situation of Prosecutor General Talaat Abdullah and the council's statement, which called on him to resign and return to working as a judge.

Following a meeting with heads of the Judge Clubs at the governorate level and with representatives of the public prosecution, Zend said that the issue of Abdullah and prosecution members’ stance toward him required dialogue and discussion.

“So far, no solution looms," he said. "However, we hope it would be resolved soon.”

Meanwhile, public prosecution members nationwide said they will meet on Wednesday at the Judges Club to mull escalation procedures that will be taken if Abdullah does not respond to their demand of returning to work.

In a statement on Monday, prosecution members said they have been defending the independence of the judiciary since eruption of the crisis sparked by President Mohamed Morsy's 22 November decree. They also agreed that Abdullah should leave the post which he came to occupy in an illegal and unconstitutional way.

The members also said they will only pay attention to the interests of the country and its citizens, and expressed appreciation toward the club and the council for the stance they have taken seeking Abdullah's dismissal.

Prosecution members will end their partial strike, once Abdullah leaves the post, they added.

Mahmoud Helmy, the club spokesperson, said prosecution members still insist on partial suspension of work, until achievement of the demands they presented in their joint statement with the council last week. Helmy added that public prosecution members had decided not to meet with Justice Minister Ahmed Mekki because they feel they are represented by the council.
