Doctor: Activist injured in Tahrir shooting wakes up from coma

April 6 Youth Movement activist Mohannad Samir's condition has improved significantly after being shot in Tahrir Square, according to his doctor Mahmoud Saad at Ahmed Maher Teaching Hospital.

Samir was taken off the ventilator after he woke up from a coma. Saad told Al-Masry Al-Youm Wednesday that Samir's improvement was a "miracle." However, he added that Samir still suffered serious injuries.

"There is a birdshot [pellet] in the brain stem, another inside the brain, and a third group around the cervical spine." He added, however, that his health condition is stable and that he is expected to recover soon.

Samir was able to move parts of his body, including hands and feet, as well as opening his eyes, the doctor added, saying that his heart had initially stopped when he was admitted to the hospital.

Investigators said that four men tried to kill Samir while he was in Tahrir Square early Monday. The suspects were allegedly riding in a red car when one of them fired birdshot at his face from close range. The attackers fled after the shooting.

Meanwhile, eyewitnesses said Wednesday that security forces at Ahmed Maher Teaching Hospital confiscated a car suspected to be filled with explosives and machine guns.

Major General Gamal Abdel Aal of the Cairo Security Directorate said that police are awaiting a warrant from the prosecutor general to further inspect the car.
