Army says rumors about dismissing defense minister 'risky'

Armed Forces spokesperson Ahmed Mohamed Ali has denied rumors about the dismissal of Defense Minister Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, and urged the media to be accurate when dealing with issues related to the Armed Forces, so as not to jeopardize national security.

The Armed Forces recognize the critical stage that the country is going through, and respect the right of citizens to know facts from the official military spokesperson, Ali wrote on his Facebook page.

"The military does not deal with such rumors, and aware of its risks, and calls upon everyone to use precision and caution when dealing with issues related to the armed forces," Ali said.

The state-owned daily Al-Ahram had on Monday quoted a military source as saying officers reject compromising the stability of the military establishment to be a marionette for the regime.

The source ruled out that the president’s office spread that rumor, contending that the president knows this would be political suicide.

This comes a day after Sidqi Sobhy, the chief of staff, said that the Armed Forces would avoid interfering in politics but could play a role if things get “complicated,” without explaining the nature of such role. Sobhy was on a visit to the United Arab Emirates when he made the statement.
