The Borg Al-Arab International Airport, the second largest airport in Egypt, sustained significant damage on Sunday at the hands of roughly 250 low-ranking policemen demanding salary increases, state-run news agency MENA reported.
The low-ranking policemen, who are responsible for airport security, reportedly smashed a number of cars belonging to airport management and glass terminal facades, MENA reported, citing airport director Hani Uqab.
Uqab said that striking policemen also destroyed internet and electricity cables, estimating total losses at some LE1.5 million (roughly $0.22 million).
Civil aviation ministry officials were unavailable to comment on the issue. The ministry's media office told Ahram Online that the minister and his staff were busy welcoming Egypt's national under-20 football team – which won the African championship on Saturday – at Cairo International Airport.
Earlier on Sunday, the assistant interior minister reportedly succeeded in ending the policemen's strike after promising them that their demands would be met, Al-Ahram's Arabic-language news website reported.
