The Muslim Brotherhood and its political arm the Freedom and Justice Party are planning to meet with leaders from the Wasat Party, the Nour Party and the National Salvation Front to discuss a possible Cabinet reshuffle and the fate of Prosecutor General Talaat Abdallah.
Helmy al-Gazzar, a leader in the FJP, told Al-Masry Al-Youm that the party hopes to reach consensus in the meeting, and would consider the Nour Party and NSF’s proposals regarding the Cabinet and Abdallah’s dismissal.
The FJP would consider the opposition’s demands if they found them to serve the best interests of the nation, added FJP chief Saad al-Katatny.
The party would be ready to remove Prime Minister Hesham Qandil if all parties reached a consensus on a replacement with the necessary qualifications to save the country’s struggling economy, said an FJP source. The removal of Brotherhood figures from the Cabinet, however, is less likely to occur, the source added.
The FJP is keen to solve the controversy surrounding the position of the prosecutor general, but at the same time rejects all attempted assaults on the president’s powers, and any attempts to make him look weak in front of the public, the source continued.
He added that Katatny is trying to convince NSF figures to take part in the upcoming parliamentary elections, which have yet to be rescheduled. The NSF had previously declared it would boycott the elections.
