A number of youths have begun an initiative called "Heliopolis Heritage Initiative" to prevent the demolition of buildings that have special architectural features in Cairo's Masr al-Gedida and maintain the architectural character of the area.
The youths described the destruciton of buildings with those architectural features in the area as "hard blows to Masr al-Gedida's architectural heritage".
"A myriad of residential buildings with great diversity of special architectural styles, palaces, villas, and old buildings are demolished and replaced with hideous residential towers that lack all taste and harmony," the youths said.
Members of the campaign on Sunday evening staged a protest in front of the Swiss Chalet building in Cairo in an attempt to save it from demolition.
