A complaint accusing Salafist activist Abdel-Rahman Ezz of allegedly attempting to torch the headquarters of the liberal Al-Wafd Party was withdrawn Saturday.
“We call on the youth of the revolution in parties or movements to unite, and not to fall into strife between young people who were once partners in the revolution,” said Moataz Salah, media consultant of Al-Wafd, in a press statement following the withdrawal of the complaint.
Earlier on Sunday, North Giza prosecutors ordered the detention of Ezz for four days pending investigations into his alleged involvement in last December's arson attack on the Wafd Party's Dokki district headquarters.
Shortly after December's attack, Mohamed Tharwat, managing editor of the party's news website, accused some 500 Hazemoon members (supporters of prominent Salafist preacher Hazem Abu-Ismail) of involvement.
Abu-Ismail, however, vehemently denied the involvement of his supporters in the incident.
The charges against Ezz are supported by video footage showing him leading a protest in front of the Wafd Party's headquarters, along with two eyewitnesses who say they saw the defendant during the attack.
Ezz is a member of the Hazemoon movement and a vocal supporter of President Mohamed Morsi and the Muslim Brotherhood from which the latter hails.
