Judges club to hold emergency meeting Wednesday, discuss judicial crisis

Judges Club chief Ahmed al-Zend has declared an extraordinary meeting on Wednesday by the club’s general assembly that will be attended by members of several other judicial authorities.

The announcement, quoted by state agency MENA, comes amid rising tensions in the judicial sector as the Muslim Brotherhood pushes for a draft law that would bring changes to the laws governing judicial authorities, including a reduction of judges’ retirement age from 60 to 70.

The meeting will discuss possible consequences of the draft, as well as last Friday’s protests which demanded its approval and the “purging” of the judiciary.

Zend, in a press conference on Monday, said the club will submit a memo to the International Criminal Court within a week against political forces which led the Friday demonstrations.

Opponents of the bill dismiss it as an attempt by the Brotherhood and its supporters to influence the judiciary.

Sources had told Al-Masry Al-Youm that President Mohamed Morsy agreed with members of the Supreme Judicial Council in a meeting to withdraw the bill.
