“The U.S. is prepared to accept and deal with Maj. Gen. Abdel Fatah al-Sisi if he becomes president,” said American political expert Eric Trager in a Tuesday phone call to CBC Extra TV channel, adding that the general would likely face several challenges, especially on the political and economic levels.
Political and social forces predict that Sisi, who was promoted to Field Marshall Monday, is expected to announce his decision to run for Egypt’s presidency in the upcoming elections soon. No official declaration has yet been made.
The Supreme Council of the Armed Forces (SCAF) broadcasted an official statement on Jan. 27 mandating Sisi for president, but adding that the “final decision is his.”
Eric Trager is affiliated with the Washington Institute and has several publications in American journals on Egyptian politics and the Muslim Brotherhood. He pursued Islamic studies in Egypt in 2006-2007.
