A local imam was suspended on Tuesday and referred to an investigative committee for allegedly insulting President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi and the victim of sexual assault in Tahrir Square.A local imam was suspended on Tuesday and referred to an investigative committee for allegedly insulting President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi and the victim of sexual assault in Tahrir Square.

Mohamed Ismail al-Sayed Amer, the imam of Abu Bakr al-Siddiq Mosque in al-Salam neighborhood, allegedly said that the victim was dancing for the people in the square.

Sisi had visited the victim in a military hospital after she was sexually assaulted while celebrating his election victory earlier this month.

“We received several complaints about this imam,” said Endowments Ministry Undersecretary Gaber Tayea. “The congregation engaged in a fist fight with him for what he said.”

Tayea also said that the ministry closed down 400 small mosques.

“Unauthorized preachers are not allowed to give sermons in mosques,” Tayea added.
