State Commissioners' to review ban on Islamist charity organisation
An Egyptian court referred on Monday a challenge to a verdict lifting a ban on an Islamist charity organisation to the State Commissioners’ Authority.

The State Commissioners’ Authority will review the ban on al-Gameya al-Shareya in September, said judicial sources. The authority’s reports are not binding; only advisory.

A decision to seize the assets of 138 branches of the charity organisation was lifted by an Administrative Court ruling in June. Yet, the State Litigation Authority challenged the ruling.

Al-Gameya al-Shareya had filed a lawsuit at the administrative court challenging the initial decision to seize its assets. The Central Bank of Egypt froze the funds of more than 1000 non-governmental organisations in December over their alleged affiliation with the Muslim Brotherhood, including the charity organisation.

An urgent matters court ordered the confiscation of the Brotherhood’s capital and dissolving any organisations affiliated with it in September.

The charity organisation had denied any affiliation with the Muslim Brotherhood, stressing that it is monitored by the Central Auditing Organisation.

A committee established to assess the funds of the Muslim Brotherhood, as per the 23 September court ruling, has confiscated the assets of over 784 Brotherhood members. It has also seized the organisation’s headquarters nationwide, as well as the headquarters of its Freedom and Justice Party, and 87 schools affiliated with the group.
