Egypt's police uncovers IS recruitment cell: MENA

Egyptian security forces in the Suez Canal city of Port Said say they have uncovered a recruitment cell for the radical militant group Islamic State (IS).

A police official told Egypt's state news agency MENA that members of the cell have confessed, and that the cell is comprised of eight people, four of whom are currently in Syria, where IS operates.

Suspects from the cell are currently jailed pending investigation. MENA didn't reveal the names of the suspects, or how many were arrested.

Egypt recently joined a US-led coalition formed to combat IS's growing threat, after the group seized large swathes of land in Syria and Iraq.

IS has urged Egypt-based militants to press on with their attacks against Egyptian security forces, which have intensified since the ouster of Islamist president Mohamed Morsi in July 2013.

Egypt's security forces have arrested hundreds suspected of carrying out or aiding terrorist attacks in Egypt, which have claimed the lives of hundreds of police and army officers and personnel.
