Policeman shot dead in Egypt's Assiut
A policeman was killed by unknown assailants in Upper Egypt's Assiut late Monday, Al-Ahram’s Arabic news website reported.

Mazhar Ahmed Hassan, a low-ranking policeman in Sahel Selim area of Assiut, was shot on his way home.

Assiut security director, Tarek Nasr said that authorities are investigating the incident.

Unidentified suspects also shot a police officer dead in Fayoum governorate on Wednesday.

Police and army personnel have been targets of such attacks over the past year.

Attacks have especially occured in North Sinai where the military has been battling a decade-long insurgency that has intensified over the past year and spread to Cairo and the Nile Delta.

Some bomb attacks on police and military sites were claimed by jihadist groups such as Ajnad Misr and Ansar Beit Al-Maqdis – the latter of which pledged allegiance to the Islamic State last month.
