The fight against the Islamic State group “must be a shared international effort and should not be left to any one nation along,” said British Ambassador John Casson in a high-level meeting with Egyptian officials and a UK delegation of senior officials and counter-terrorism experts Thursday.
The participants discussed shared threats faced by the UK and Egypt in Libya, Sinai, and Iraq and Syria, according to a news release from the U.K. embassy.
Britain and Egypt are both members of an international coalition to combat the Islamic State group, which in mid-February released a video from its Libyan branch of the beheading of 20 Egyptian Christians in Libya.
“The Security Dialogue is an important new initiative for the UK and Egypt to enhance practical cooperation to help defeat terrorism and keep our people safe,” Casson said, adding that a key challenge is to “undermine and discredit the poisonous, twisted ideology” of the group.
